Rota Tarih | “THE BRONZE MEN COMING FROM THE SEA”, THE CARIANS

Anatolia, even though its boundaries underwent changes by the civilizations which established power, has represented a desirable and interesting area in every era of the history. As revealed by Halfrod J. Mackinder and many others in the 19th century, the access to the heartland and its defense, which is seen essential for the world domination, could not be achieved without seizing Anatolia. Therefore, both Anatolia and the heartland have flourished in every period in our historical adventure.

This has resulted in the Anatolian history which is built from occupations and attacks.

During the years of 2500 Before Christ (BC), the Hatti civilization was ruling in Anatolia. It has been a basic model that affects the lives and management styles of the following civilizations. In Tolga Örnek's 2003 documentary film about the Hittites, vast information is given about the Hattis. It is seen in the documentary that the Hatties affected many civilizations in Anatolia in terms of belief and worship, administrative and social legislation, burial and cult of gods and similar themes.

After the collapse of the Hatties in 1700s BC, other civilizations were established in Anatolia including Luwians, Hittites, Carians, Dorians, Persians, Thrace, Phrygians, Mushkis, Lydians, Lycians, Cilicians and Cappadocians.

From 300 BC to the Byzantine Empire’s ruling in 395 AD, Anatolia remained under the influence of the Hellens, Cimmerians and Romans.

After 395 AD, wars were made with the Byzantines, Persians and Arabs; also Pechenegs and Oghuzs came to Anatolia. In the subsequent period, Anatolia was ruled by the Seljuks, Mongols and İlkhanids, respectively.

After 1071, the Ottomans established sovereignty over Anatolia from principality until the end of the empire period, and this period continued until the establishment of Turkish Republic in 1923.

It is natural that such a geography that was visited, settled and terminated with so many civilizations also contains many historic and ancient values. Temples, tombs, monuments, inscriptions, theatres and cities which are parts of religious beliefs and social life are the photo albums of our historical adventure.

Like every corner of Anatolia, Marmaris located at the southwest end, has also been a part of this adventure.
